Archived Radar Coded Message (RCM) Data Maps

Radar Coded Message (RCM) summaries are composites of high resolution CONUS NEXRAD reflectivity data that have been mapped to 10-km gridded resolution. This process loses some detail, but it still provides much finer resolution than previous Manually Digitized Radar (MDR) report-based maps. RCM reports also are provided every half-hour compared to the hourly frequency of previous MDR reports. Besides reflectivity, they also provide additional products that reflect the operational status and modes of the radar sites. They also can provide some additional information on the echoes, such as movement, tops, and associated severe weather. This site provides data starting on 1 January 2002 at 0015Z through 2 March 2022 at 1545Z at which time NWS apparently stopped transmission of these products. RCM data transmission resumed on 18 July 2022 at 1745Z and the data are available here, but these data now often seem very incomplete with no data from many sites/times and essentially stopped being transmitted at the start of 2023. Use any more recent data cautiously.

  • RCM data maps are more detailed than corresponding MDR maps.
